Smith Promoted to GM

From Sportsline.com:

Otis Smith is expected to sign a four-year contract when the Orlando Magic name him the club's general manager within the next few weeks.

Smith and Dave Twardzik replaced general manager John Weisbrod and ran the club as assistant GMs this past season. NBA sources told the Sentinel last week that Smith and the Magic have been working on details of a contract.

Meanwhile, the Magic will not renew the contracts of trainer Ted Arzonico and Mick Smith, assistant coach for strength and conditioning. Arzonico, who was with the Magic for six seasons, represented the club as the trainer for the Eastern Conference in the NBA All-Star Game in February. Smith, no relation to Otis Smith, had been with the club for the past nine seasons.

Although Magic President Bob Vander Weide said he also would look outside for candidates, he intimated recently that Smith was the front-runner. Smith, a player on the Magic's 1989 inaugural team, served as director of player development with the Magic for two seasons after a year as director of basketball operations for the Golden State Warriors. Twardzik, a veteran league executive who was the former general manager at Golden State, said he was not interested in the job. Twardzik is expected to stay with the Magic in another capacity.
