Tatupu Named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month

From Seahawks.com:

Linebacker Lofa Tatupu of the Seattle Seahawks and running back Carnell “Cadillac” Williams of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the NFL Defensive and Offensive Rookies of the Month for December/January, the NFL announced Wednesday.

  • Linebacker LOFA TATUPU was a defensive standout throughout the year for the 13-3 Seahawks, continuing his stellar play as the season concluded, helping his team to the NFC’s No. 1 playoff seed and the best record in franchise history. A second-round pick from Southern California, Tatupu helped the club to a 4-1 record in December/January games, totaling 23 tackles, two interceptions, 1.0 sack, one fumble recovery and seven passes defensed. The son of 14-year NFL veteran MOSI TATUPU, Lofa scored his first NFL touchdown in a 42-0 win at Philadelphia on December 5, scoring on a 38-yard interception return. The following week in a 41-3 triumph over San Francisco, he recovered a fumble to set up a touchdown on the very next play. Tatupu, the club’s leading tackler this season, helped the team surrender just 94.4 rushing yards per game, fifth fewest in the NFL, and permit only one opposing running back to rush for 100 yards. Tatupu finished the season as one of only four NFL linebackers with at least three interceptions (three) and 3.0 sacks (4.0).
Tatupu is the second Seahawk ever to earn an NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month award, joining ROCKY BERNARD (September, 2002).
